A Better Way to Prepare for Exams

A Better Way to Prepare for Exams
Sleep could prove to be an important part of the strategy for preparing for challenges such as exams. "The fact that sleep provoked slightly more plasticity (connections between nerve cells) than double the amount of exposure to experience – suggests that if you reviewed your notes thoroughly until you were tired and then slept, you'd achieve as much plasticity, or 'learning,' in the brain as if you'd pulled an all-nighter repeating your review of the material," says Michael P. Stryker, Ph.D., researcher at the University of California, San Francisco
Studies have shown that sleep-loss affects learning and memory. When animals and humans are deprived of sleep, they do not perform well on memory tasks.

The Miracle of Green Tea "Better to be deprived of food for three days, than tea for one." (Ancient Chinese Proverb)

Is any other food or drink reported to have as many health benefits as green tea? The Chinese have known about the medicinal benefits of green tea since ancient times, using it to treat everything from headaches to depression. In her book Green Tea: The Natural Secret for a Healthier Life, Nadine Taylor states that green tea has been used as a medicine in China for at least 4,000 years.
Today, scientific research in both Asia and the west is providing hard evidence for the health benefits long associated with drinking green tea. For example, in 1994 the Journal of the National Cancer Institute published the results of an epidemiological study indicating that drinking green tea reduced the risk of esophageal cancer in Chinese men and women by nearly sixty percent. University of Purdue researchers recently concluded that a compound in green tea inhibits the growth of cancer cells. There is also research indicating that drinking green tea lowers total cholesterol levels, as well as improving the ratio of good (HDL) cholesterol to bad (LDL) cholesterol.

Why we're Loco for Choco!

We love chocolate for different reasons however taste and smell are priority. The Maya and Aztec people were the first who enjoyed the taste of chocolate. For these people chocolate was not a sweet like we know it nowadays but it was a bitter beverage which was used for religious reasons but also as medicine to treat stomach problems, fatigue, reducing fever and many other diseases. They were convinced that chocolate has a miraculous power which gave them wisdom and benefits to people's health.
Nowadays chocolate is not a bitter beverage anymore but is popular because it's delicious and addictive taste. It smells in our mouth and there are so many different kinds of chocolate that almost everyone loves one of more of these different types of chocolate. Chocolate is rich in calories and sugars but offers also some health benefits which declare the different reasons why people love chocolate.
The most important reasons why we love chocolate are:
Taste
Chocolate is delicious and there is a high variety in different types which give another taste on this delicious sweet. Milk chocolate is probably the most popular one but there are a lot of people preferring some other types like dark chocolate, white chocolate, chocolate with liquor, unsweetened, semi-sweet or bittersweet.
Chocolate is available in every country of the world but there are many differences in the quality. The Belgian chocolate is popular worldwide and has the strongest fabrication rules. Most of the Belgium recipes contain 100% cacao butter and this guarantees an excellent quality and delicious taste of chocolate. Also Switzerland is popular for their delicious chocolate.
*Smell
The aroma of chocolate melts in our mouth and gives an impulse to our brains which transmit the delicious flavor perfectly. This aroma gives us an enjoyable feeling which makes us euphoric. The aroma of chocolate will put us in a good mood.
*Addictive
Chocolate is addictive and works like a drug. Chocolate contains stimulant substances, also called opioids" like caffeine, theobromine and methylxantines which will make people more relaxed.
*Love
Chocolate is also associated with love. Chocolate contains substances which give you a feeling like being in love. Already in the time of the Aztecs there was a common belief that chocolate was a kind of aphrodisiac which provides a healthy sex life. Chocolate is also a popular gift with Valentine's Day. Chocolate love hearts are often bought for expressing their feelings of love for each other.
*Health
Chocolate contains a lot of sugar and fats but also some chemicals which lower the risk of some cancers and heart diseases. Especially dark chocolate contains flavanoids and antioxidants which lower your blood pressure and has a positive influence on the condition of your heart as long you don't exaggerate.
A new study shows now also that chocolate is good for your memory. Chocolate contains the chemical "epicatechin" which improves the blood flow in your brains.
I love chocolate because it is delicious and smells good. The great variation in the different types of chocolate makes it easy to choose the right chocolate for every occasion.
Enjoy this delicious sweet which was in the past the symbol of wisdom

Man's Best Friend

Dog lovers have no problem telling you why the dog is considered man's best friend. Loyalty, unconditional love, companionship and laughs. Any doctor can also tell you that having pets makes our lives better and makes us healthier, by convincing us to be more active. No matter how lazy you feel, who can resist Rover when he comes up begging to go for a walk? You can't argue with the fact that we become much more relaxed, lowering our blood pressure, when our loving dog or cat comes to us to say hello and asks for a gentle pet.
Dogs are amazing creatures! Not only can they be incredible friends, but many dogs provide humans with much needed assistance, as well as love and companionship. It literally brings tears to my eyes to see how some of these wonderful service dogs faithfully do their jobs—their mission in life is to help people. From being their eyes, to helping them get around in wheelchairs. From picking up a dropped pencil, to warning the deaf that something needs their attention.
I'm a dog lover. I'm particularly in love with larger/smart dogs, such as shepherds, labs and collies. Sadly, we had to put our Sheltie down two years ago from cancer and, the next year, our Shepherd due to hip disease. They both had very good lives as our constant pals for 12 years. As much as I miss them, it's hard for me to imagine the feeling of loss to someone who depends on their dogs to get through their day.

Would More Physical Education Reduce Youth Overweight?

The prevalence of youth overweight has risen dramatically over the past three decades in the U.S. and now represents an epidemic. Since 1970, the fraction of children that are overweight has nearly quadrupled among 6 to 11 year olds and more than doubled among 12 to 19 year olds. Currently, one in six children aged 6 to 19 is overweight, defined as a body mass index (BMI) above the 95th percentile of the historical BMI distribution. Youth overweight is a major public concern because of its well-documented detrimental effects on physical health, mental health, and health care costs.
One possible contributing factor to the rise in youth overweight is decreased physical education (PE) in schools. For example, the percentage of high school students enrolled in daily PE classes fell from 42% to 28% between 1991 and 2003.
The dual trends of rising youth overweight and declining PE time have led numerous organizations, including the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Secretaries of Education and Health and Human Services, to call for students to spend more time in PE classes. Legislation to increase or reform PE has been introduced in 38 state legislatures this year.
Despite the calls for reform, there is little empirical evidence showing that more time in PE classes helps to reduce youth overweight. This question is examined in a new study by John Cawley, Chad Meyerhoefer, and David Newhouse, "The Impact of State Physical Education Requirements on Youth Physical Activity and Overweight" (NBER Working Paper 11411).
The authors note that simply comparing the effect of time spent in PE on physical activity or weight is likely to be problematic. For example, PE classes may be electives and students who enjoy physical activity may be more likely to enroll, creating a relationship between PE time and physical activity that is not causal. To address this, the authors use state PE requirements to predict the amount of time students spend in PE and use this predicted measure in their analysis. The data for their analysis is a sample of 37,000 high school students from the 1999-2003 Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System.
The authors first test whether time spent in PE classes translates into a greater amount of physical activity. They find that it does, but the effects are small. For example, more than two additional hours per week of PE are required for students to report that there was an additional day during the week that they exercised vigorously for at least 20 minutes or did any strength-building activity. As the authors note, "it appears that little of the time spent in PE classes that students classify as spent exercising or playing sports translates into additional days with substantial exercise or strength-building activity."
Next, they explore whether additional PE time affects student weight. They find no detectable impact of PE time on BMI or the probability that the student is overweight or at risk of overweight (above the 95th or 85th percentile of the historical BMI distribution).

The authors note that their findings are consistent with those of a previous study that focused on younger children. Thus they conclude that "the consistent inability to reject the null hypothesis of no effect of PE on student overweight suggests that there is not yet a scientific base for the many recent calls to increase PE in order to prevent or reduce childhood overweight."

Cant explain it better even if i tried!

Supertanker - Knock Nevis

The Knock Nevis is a floating storage and offloading unit (FSO) currently owned by the Norwegian company Fred Olsen Production. The unit was previously a supertanker and as such held the record for the world's largest ship. As a tanker the ship was known under the names Seawise Giant, Happy Giant, and Jahre Viking.

General Characteristic

Tonnage:260,941 GT (214,793 NT)
Length:458.45 m (1,504.10ft)
Beam:68.8 m (225.72ft)
Draft:29.8 m (97.77ft)
Capacity:564,650 DWT

Knock Nevis was built in 1979 at Sumitomo Heavy Industries's Oppama shipyard as Seawise Giant. The ship was built for a Greek owner who was unable to take delivery of the ship.
The shipyard then exercised its right to sell the ship. A deal was brokered with Hong Kong shipping magnate C. Y. Tung founder of the shipping line Orient Overseas Container Line.
A deal was reached, but Tung required the ship's size be increased by several metres in length and 87,000 metric tons of cargo capacity by jumboisation. Two years later, the vessel was launched and named Seawise Giant.
After the refit, the ship had a capacity of 564,763 metric tons of deadweight (DWT), a length overall of 458.45metres (1,504.1ft) and a draft of 24.611metres (80.74ft). She had 46 tanks, 31,541square metres (339,500sqft) of deck space, and was too large to pass through the English Channel.
From 1979 to 2004, she was owned by the company Loki Stream AS. During this period she flew the Norwegian flag.
In this period, she was renamed Happy Giant from 1989 to 1991.

Osama bin Laden may be dead, but is America ready for what's ahead?

Bin Laden was shot dead at a compound near Islamabad, in a ground operation based on US intelligence, the first lead for which emerged last August.
Mr Obama said US forces took possession of the body after "a firefight".
Bin Laden is believed to have ordered the attacks on New York and Washington on 11 September 2001 and a number of others.
He was top of the US' "most wanted" list.
DNA tests later confirmed that Bin Laden was dead, US officials said.
Bin Laden was buried at sea after a Muslim funeral on board an aircraft carrier.

Is this really victory? Or should we expect the worst to come?  I believe we are lost about what lies ahead for America but we can only wait and see.

Fuel Prices at the pump take a welcomed dip

But there’s some positive news; consumers can look forward to some relief at the gas pump, because fuel prices took a dip at midnight on Sunday.  Premium went down by sixteen cents, bringing the price back below the twelve dollar mark at eleven-ninety-seven. Diesel had an even bigger decrease of sixty-eight cents and is now selling at ten dollars and twenty-nine. For those who use regular gasoline, the price remains at eleven dollars and sixty-seven cents.

with the dramatic increase in price will our economy remain in a recession?  I can say for myself that times are changinging and our money begins to devalue right before our eyes.
